Person Specification

The Windmill Trust is a new UK charity working in Cumbria to transform young lives through specialist psychotherapy. Charity No:  1195160.

Our vision is a future where, regardless of economic background, children and young people have access to researched, effective therapeutic interventions to alleviate distress and ward against long term mental health issues.  We work directly with infants, children, teenagers, young people, parents and carers.  We aim to provide therapeutic support to those at risk of suffering long term effects who are least likely to have access to therapeutic professionals.

The Windmill Trust has been created by two experienced therapists who recognised that there is a need for a service that works with those children who don’t qualify for statutory funding but who are at risk.   Lesley Ritchie, one of the founders and the Chair, is the Director (and founder) of About Children in Kendal and The Windmill Trust therefore has the benefit of her twenty-five years of experience in working therapeutically with children with complex emotional needs.

The Windmill Trust is a new venture, but we have a vast working knowledge of the local agencies, schools and services through doing this work privately.  Our speciality is long term, creative therapy for children/young people with complex trauma and it is relationship based.  We tend to work with children/young people whose trust in adults has been shattered.  It takes a long time to rebuild this trust because the impact of attachment trauma is profound, both neurologically and developmentally.

Our Trustees/Governance

We currently have six trustees who between them bring a wealth of experience in the areas of Developmental Trauma and Therapy, Equality and Diversity, Finance, Charity Management, Education and Health.  As a charity it is our ethos that all trustees have full DBS checks and participate in Safeguarding training.  We have joined West Cumbria Strategic Mental Health Partnership as we are committed to working with other organisations and complimenting rather than duplicating the work already being done in the county.

We are in an exciting position to be building a service from the ground up and growing to meet the demand for this work in the county.  We are looking to recruit several new members of staff who are keen to join us on our journey and play an integral part in developing both the service and their own role.  While we make this transition, we are only able to offer some posts as part time initially although our vision is that these posts will become full time and we would be interested in finding candidates who might be looking for part time positions where there is a possibility of full-time hours in the future.

The post is subject to DBS clearance.
